San Juan, Puerto Rico– In a cultural encounter where folk art, music and tradition come together in perfect harmony, Plaza Las Américas presents the thirteenth edition of “De PLAZA pa’ la Calle en las Octavitas”. The event will take place from the 7th to the 10th of January with the participation of 115 artisans, 20 artists of the Puerto Rican Engraving Collective and a large number of musical groups.
Presented as a huge town party during the traditional Puerto Rican ‘octavitas’, the corridors of the shopping mall will house artisans who will have available a variety of unique pieces in different art types and stations of pork rinds, maví, and piraguas (Puerto Rican shaved ice dessert), among others. The celebration will also serve to recognize and honor the memory of Sixto Cotto, master engraver, who died in 2015 and was part of the Puerto Rican Engraving Collective since its establishment.
The artistic offering will consist of different groups such as Hazel Thais Rivera, who will play in the cello music by Bach while artists from the Journey of Engraving perform original works in time to the music, the troubadour Laura Ivelis Rosado and her group Sabor a Melao, Gallery Music String Quartet, the PR Gifted School Alliance Bell Choir, Los Violines de Marquito, Renacer Bell Choir from the Bayamón Municipal Library, Lucero Robles, Los Hermanos Sanz, Indigenous Ballet, Pleneros y Cabezudos Parade, String Orchestra of Puerto Rico, among others.
During “De PLAZA pa’ la Calle en las Octavitas”, wil be available a series of demonstrations, free workshops and talks, mostly focused on the theme of artisanal engraving. These activities will be taught by experts in the field and will be open to the public eager to learn more about this traditional art form.
