Twenty-three inches is small for a bench, and in a lot of homes that is exactly what is needed. The space beside a front door is often no more than two feet before a radiator or a doorframe, and a bench sized for a generous hallway simply will not go there. This one fits, and a bench that fits gets used.Despite the size, the seat is rated to 350 lb, which is higher than many benches twice its width and means it is genuine seating rather than a perch. The cushion is foam over a bamboo frame, giving enough padding for the time it takes to deal with laces without the bulk that would make a compact bench look oversized.Bamboo is the sensible material for a piece that lives where wet shoes and umbrellas arrive, handling the damp better than most timber while staying light. The bench measures 12.6 in deep and stands 16.9 in tall, and at 12.1 lb assembled it moves with one hand. In a small flat where the entryway is really just the end of a corridor, this is the size of bench that works rather than the one that has to be squeezed in.
