At twelve inches tall this is a fire pit you sit around rather than at. Chairs pull in close, feet find the edge, and a wide bed of lava rocks glows at knee height where it does the most good. Forty thousand Btu come up through a stainless burner and spread evenly across the full 18 in square opening. The white terrazzo is what lifts it out of the ordinary. Stone flecks scatter across a pale ground so the table looks like a landscaping element during daylight and turns into the centerpiece after dark. Metal structure underneath carries the sixty five pounds of it, and the surface shrugs off sun and rain the way cast stone should. Everything about getting started is short. There is no assembly, a ten foot hose gives you real freedom about where the 20 lb cylinder hides, one Aa battery drives the spark, and Csa certification covers the burner system. When the evening ends, the fitted Pvc cover goes over the top and keeps ash rain and leaves off the terrazzo until the next time somebody suggests sitting outside.
