Forty-seven inches is below eye level for most people, and that height makes a bookcase behave differently in a room. It defines a space without dividing it, so a low unit can stand behind a sofa, under a window, or as a partial divider in an open-plan room while still letting sight lines run over the top. The footprint is 31.5 in wide by 11.8 in deep, which is a wide, low proportion rather than a tall narrow one. That shape gives long shelves rather than short ones, which suits rows of books, vinyl, or a run of storage boxes better than a narrow tower does. Each tier carries 33 lb with an overall static capacity of 132 lb, and the steel frame is what carries the load across a 31.5 in span without the shelf bowing in the middle. Particleboard on steel brings the assembled unit to 26 lb. Honey brown with a black frame is warm rather than stark, and because the unit is low, its top surface ends up in daily use for a lamp, a plant, or the things that come out of pockets.
