Fourteen locking positions is the number that decides whether a floor chair earns its space. Every stop between fully upright and a backrest laid at 84 degrees holds where it is set, so the same chair takes an upright angle for playing games, a shallow lean for watching TV and a near-flat setting for reading, without anybody wedging cushions behind their back to make it work. Weight ratings are stated separately for the two parts that carry it: 200 lbs across the seat and 77 lbs on the backrest, which is the figure that matters at full recline. Underneath the flannel or coral velvet cover sits thick sponge padding, deep enough that the frame is never felt through it during a long stretch on the floor, and the frame itself is alloy-steel pipe, the part that survives being folded and unfolded daily. Opened out flat the chair runs 41.5 by 22 by 6 in, low enough to serve as a floor bed for an overnight guest and useful as extra seating whenever a living room fills up. Folded it becomes a block of roughly 26 by 21 by 21 in that slides under a bed, a couch or a desk, so it is out of sight between uses rather than parked against a wall.
