Each panel rides on a pneumatic lifting system that takes the effort out of the motion, and the travel is quiet, stable and smooth rather than the spring-loaded snap that makes cheaper mechanisms feel unsafe. Raised, the top sits at 22 in, a jump of 5.5 in over the closed height and enough to eat, type or write without hunching over. Under each panel sits a concealed compartment. The larger measures 30 in x 16.5 in x 6 in inside and the smaller 14 in x 16.5 in x 6 in, deep enough for laptops, controllers, chargers and paperwork to disappear completely so the closed table reads as a clean walnut slab rather than a storage unit. Closed, the large top is rated for 132 lbs and the small top for 68 lbs, while the compartments hold 22 lbs and 11 lbs respectively. Deliberate grooves run between each tabletop and the side boards, keeping fingers clear of the closing edge. Support comes from four splayed solid wood legs plus a fifth center leg fitted with an adjustable foot pad that stops the middle of the span from deforming or sinking on uneven flooring.
