What there is instead is a 48 in x 12 in x 32 in frame in solid rubber wood, a thickened top board, and bolted joints. Twelve inches of depth is the number that decides where this piece can live. It is shallow enough to sit against a wall in a tight passage, behind a sofa, or in a gap that would swallow a full-depth cabinet, and it still gives a 48 in run of surface for vases, framed photos, table lamps and books. The top is rated for 132 lbs, so a pair of lamps and a stack of hardbacks is nowhere near its limit. Rubber wood is what keeps a 21-lb frame this rigid. It is a dense hardwood that resists cracking as it dries and sands down splinter-free, which matters on a piece at hand height that gets brushed past all day. The finish is smooth enough that dust and marks wipe straight off rather than settling into open grain. Structurally the whole thing relies on firm bolt connections rather than dowels or glue blocks, which is what lets a narrow four-leg frame stay square under a load that far exceeds anything decorative.
